As a high school student I almost never used MS Word and relied solely on Google Docs. I preferred Google Docs because of the "cloud" feature where you can access any document from any computer or device. I was the queen of forgetting to print out a paper before I got to school. Google Docs allowed me to access my paper without having to carry the most up to date file on a flash drive. In college though I have mainly used MS Word because I rarely have to print things out and I almost always have my personal computer with me.
The standard that I felt was most important as an educator is number 3, citizen. This standard compels educators to teach students how to be responsible and respectful members of digital communities. In this "digital age" it's very easy for young people to publish mean things while hiding behind a keyboard. Educators should press the importance and model skill of being able to respectfully disagree with someone else.
I definitely think that the label of "digital native" is accurate for this generation. People who are digital natives are ones that grew up with technology. This generation of upcoming educators already had the internet when they were born. It is a stark contrast from the digital immigrants that have had to change and adapt to technology. When I was in high school every teacher had a student that was the "tech person" which was a student that knew how to turn on a computer and open up Google, nothing that is too difficult. As digital natives step into the roles of educators, we will still have to change and adapt because technology is rapidly changing.
Hey Rebecca! I didn't use MS Word in high school either, I believe google's application are more user friendly. The "cloud" is one of google's factors I also think is most helpful because as long as you have a computer/phone/tablet, you are able to access everything! Though, as I've become reacquaintanced to MS Word in college, having the app on my phone has made it equally as easy to access all of my work.
ReplyDeleteHi Rebecca! Your blog post was so interesting. I too love using Google docs better than Microsoft Word. It is so simple and easy for anyone to use. I agree that teachers need to teach students how to behave online. It is a vital skill in today’s world and can take them a long way. We are definitely digital natives like you said. I’m not ready when I become a teacher and need to use a “tech student.”
ReplyDeleteHi Rebecca! I’m way more used to using google docs too, I never used word in high school. The point you made about educators as citizens was really interesting, I hadn’t thought abut it in terms of teaching students about hiding behind their keyboards.
ReplyDeleteHey there Rebecca! I really like your commentary on the “Citizen” standard. I didn’t even think to apply it to the concept of cyberbullying, but that’s a very good point. It’s a significant flaw of the digital age, and educators should do what they can to curb it. Good job!
